MSPFILM Education: Nextwave
Nextwave is a youth education initiative dedicated to the next generation of filmmakers, critics, and film aficionados. Championing youth-made films as well as international cinema for young audiences, the Film Society’s Nextwave Initiative empowers young people to develop their appreciation for the art and craft of filmmaking, to practice critical literacy skills, and to add their own voices to the global conversation.
Nextwave provides multiple opportunities for young people to explore the world through cinema, including:
Nextwave: Childish Films
Presented annually at MSPIFF, the Childish Films program exposes young audiences to great children’s cinema from around the world, introducing a new generation to the film festival experience. The 2018 program will be announced on March 22.

Nextwave: Youth Juries
Nextwave Youth Juries invite the next generation of film critics and film aficionados to deepen their experience at MSPIFF by participating on juries for ages 11-14 and 15-18. Youth Jurors learn to apply a critical eye to film, attend MSPIFF, and award films from both the Nextwave Youth Film Competition and Childish Films.
Nextwave: Youth Film Competition
Nextwave Youth Film Competition is for young filmmakers ages 18 and under. Nextwave films are selected to screen at the MSPIFF by a committee of peers and are eligible for two competitive awards: Best Youth Film and Excellence in Youth Filmmaking, chosen by the Nextwave Youth Jury.
