Parallel stories on the opposite sides of the Hong Kong-Mainland boarder highlight the importance of financial wherewithal in both places. Anna (Carina Lau), an affluent middle-aged society type, struggles to keep up appearances when her husband vanishes and leaves her for broke; meanwhile Anna’s driver, Hui (Chen Kun), is trying to raise the cash needed to secretly bring his wife from Shenzhen to give birth to their second child. An assured debut feature from Flora Lau (enlisting the talents of Christopher Doyle as cinematographer), Bends is a subtle yet emotionally powerful drama.
