Representative of the innovation happening in contemporary independent Mainland Chinese film, journalist-turned-director Chai Chunya crafts an exploratory tale on the massive changes in rural China. Young college student Ga Gui returns to her hometown on the premonition that her elderly father is dying. Through the eyes of Ga Gui, Four Ways (referring to the elements) portrays the effects of people moving away from the countryside in a poetic and incredibly imaginative story.
