Nicolas Cage returns to his indie roots in the title role as the hard-living, hot-tempered, ex-con Joe Ransom, who is just trying to dodge his instincts for trouble until he meets a hard-luck kid (played by Tye Sheridan from Mud) who awakens in him a fierce and tender-hearted protector. In a departure from his comedies Prince Avalanche and Pineapple Express, director David Gordon Green delivers a gripping mix of friendship, violence and redemption in the contemporary backwoods south. This adaptation of Larry Brown's novel of the same name is a gritty and moving character study you won't want to miss.
