The Dog
Play Trailer

Most people have heard that Sidney Lumet’'s 1975 film Dog Day Afternoon was based on a true story, but who was the real character that inspired Al Pacino’s Sonny?

This astonishing documentary of the late John Wojtowicz, who came to be known as “The Dog,” proves that truth is far more interesting than fiction. Shuffling between the 1970s and the 2000s and employing archival footage, this intimate portrait shows Wojtowicz’s role in the New York's gay liberation movement as well as his undeniable complexity as an individual: by turns, lovable, maniacal, profane, passionate, heroic, and self-destructive.
