American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez
American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez
Legendary Chicano playwright and director Luis Valdez’s storytelling, epitomized in the films Zoot Suit and La Bamb,a and his creation of El Teatro Campesino, a theater that performed Chicano plays in English and Spanish, helped prove, in his words, “America is Chicano”.
Often producing plays and films against the tide of what was considered “conventional” storytelling (Zoot Suit is at once a conventional film and a filmed play), Valdez celebrated the Chicano Movement and specifically the United Farm Workers, with the full approval of Cesar Chavez. David Alvarado’s documentary shines a new light on one of America’s very best storytellers. Sundance Audience Award Winner for U.S. Documentary.
