Crocodile Tears

Dir. Tumpal Tampubolon
98 min

Mama has always run Johan’s life on their crocodile farm in West Java. Far removed from society, Johan isn’t aware that his mother is a bit of a dictator. So when the beautiful Arumi enters the picture, and Johan falls in love, Mama isn’t happy, and she’ll do anything to keep them apart in Tumpal Tampubolon’s hard-boiled and surreal debut.

Running a croc farm ain’t easy, and Mama and Johan have become experts in a very dangerous profession. Worried about her son, Mama’s concern has slowly grown into full-blown authoritarianism, as she controls his every move, his every thought. When Arumi comes to their small town, Johan discovers that his love can have another focus, and she can help him find a world away from the crocodile farm. Tumpal Tampubolon’s film is slow-cooked hard-boiled neo-noir, whose tension builds to a fierce climax.
