ABOUT THE FILM

Daughters of the Forest (Hijas del Bosque) is a documentary rooted in the true story of two Indigenous mycologists: Juli, a Zapotec biologist from Oaxaca, and Lis, a Tlahuica-Pjiekakjoo mycologist from the State of Mexico. Their relationship with fungi opens a space between science, ancestral knowledge, and an urgent call to protect a fragile environment. Set in the forests of central Mexico and filmed across several mushroom seasons, the film follows them between the “hard” sciences of biology and mycology and the ancestral knowledge passed down through their grandmothers. Rather than opposing one another, these ways of knowing emerge as complementary—like mycelium, forming invisible networks of connection. Fungi become more than organisms to be studied. They carry the wisdom of the living world, becoming portals into unseen realms, keepers of memory, and bridges between biological, emotional, and ancestral realities. The film explores hidden relationships between humans and fungi, and the possibility that nature communicates through networks beyond our perception. Director Otilia Portillo Padua’s mesmerizing Daughters of the Forest, Winner of the Audience Award at SXSW Visions 2026, is also a timely meditation on loss—of mushrooms, forests, territory, language, ancestors, and imagined futures—but like fungi transforming decay into new life, this story offers the ever-present possibility of regeneration, allowing new life to take root.
