Manas

Dir. Marianna Brennand
101 min

In her Amazonian village, teenage Marcielle watches as her older sister escapes their oppressive household. Desperate to protect her younger sister, Marcielle summons her courage to face down generations of exploitation in renowned documentarian Marianna Brennand’s debut fiction feature.

Marcielle, who goes by Tielle, lives a life that should be idyllic–with her pregnant mother, father, two brothers and a little sister, the family home sits on the island of Marajó in the Amazon. Playing games, helping around the house, spending time with her siblings–this should be the time to create wonderful memories. But Tielle soon realizes that she’s expected to capitulate to something terribly insidious. Determined to change this situation, and protect her little sister, Tielle begins to fight back. Marianna Brennand’s Manas (sisters in Portuguese) crafted this story after years of interviewing young girls and women in the Amazon rainforest.
