Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore

Dir. Shoshannah Stern
96 min

In this revealing documentary, acclaimed actor Marlee Matlin, the first Deaf actor to win an Oscar, reflects on her life in her primary language of American Sign Language with Director Shoshannah Stern, a Deaf filmmaker inspired by Matlin.

Matlin’s career has had its vicissitudes–pushing herself to face every challenge a Deaf actor does in Hollywood, she was cast as the lead in Children of a Lesser God, for which she won an Academy Award for Best Actress at age 21. In between, she has seen her share of ups and downs, including substance abuse, violent relationships, difficulty being cast in subsequent roles, all balanced by her work as a writer and actor. Director Stern has an immediate rapport with Matlin, and audiences are invited into this warm and illuminating discussion.
