Norah

Norah

Dir. Tawfik Alzaidi
95 min

In a remote Saudi Arabian village in the 1990s, a new art teacher, Nader, meets Norah, and they fall in love and inspire one another to create. The government has banned all artistic expression, and so Norah, her eyes opened to a world of possibility, wonders how she can leave Saudi.

Nader had been an artist, but when the government suppressed artistic expression in the wake of the first Gulf War, he turned to teaching, moving to the remote AlUla to instruct children. There, he meets Norah, a free spirit who lives with her aunt. Nader and Norah fall in love, and find themselves expressing their creativity, and for Norah, her hunger to create leaves her wanting to leave this oppressive environment. Tawfik Alzai’s debut feature was selected for Un Certain Regard at last year’s Cannes FIlm Festival.
