Many people have enjoyed a glass (or a bottle) of Rioja wine in their lives. But how much do we know about this wine, the region in Spain that produces it, or its unique history? Rioja, Land of the Thousand Wines, the new documentary of director, writer and cinematographer José Luis López Linares (Virgin & Extra: The Land of the Olive Oil -SIFF 2019) takes us into a fascinating tour into La Rioja, the winding land along the Ebro River, sprinkled with sunbathed villages and colorful vineyards on the hillsides. Through mesmerizing images of the whole wine making process and the testimonies of wine makers, sommeliers, award-winning enologists and restaurateurs from La Rioja, the remarkable spirit that guides the entire region becomes clear, one that combines its rich and treasured wine heritage with innovative ideas implemented by a young generation of winemakers. Traditional forms of wine making peacefully coexist with state-of-the-art technology which in turn gives birth to new denominations, new manufacturing processes, new culinary concepts, and an ever-expanding international projection. Muchos de nosotros hemos disfrutado de una copa (o botella) de vino Rioja en nuestra vida. Pero, ¿cuánto sabemos sobre este vino, la región de España que lo produce o su particular historia? Rioja, la tierra de los mil vinos, el nuevo documental del director, guionista y director de fotografía José Luis López Linares (Virgen & Extra: La Tierra del Aceite de Oliva -SIFF 2019) nos lleva en un fascinante recorrido por La Rioja, la tierra junto al sinuoso río Ebro, salpicada de pueblos bañados por el sol y coloridos viñedos en las laderas. A través de imágenes nunca antes vistas de todo el proceso de elaboración del vino y de los testimonios de bodegueros, viticultores, enólogos premiados y dueños de restaurants boutique de la región; poco a poco queda claro el espíritu que guía a toda la región, uno que combina su rica e invaluable herencia vitivinícola con ideas nuevas que aporta una generación joven de bodegueros.
