The Gas Station Attendant

Dir. Karla Murthy
83 min

Director Karla Murthy and Composer Bobak Lotfipour Attending

Filmmaker Karla Murthy’s father left his small village in India and spent years looking for work, before coming to Texas to raise a family. Her father married a woman from the Philippines, and Murthy herself lives in New York and has a family herself–it sounds like the perfect summation of the American Dream. Using recordings of late night calls with her dad while working at a gas station, and home movies, Murthy crafts a loving portrait of her father, the challenges of being an immigrant and a child-of-immigrants, and a clear-eyed examination of the American Dream.
