ABOUT THE FILM

An exhilarating adventure for young audiences, The Newcomers follows Tiana, a girl forced to flee her home after toxic pollution devastates the Highlands. Arriving in a small town with her family, she entrusts her beloved dog, Nube, to the care of two local brothers, Mateo and Tomás. When the contamination spreads to their new home, poisoning the rivers and threatening everyone's future, the three friends—joined by a fearless teenager who knows the terrain—embark on a dangerous quest to uncover the true source of the disaster. Along the way, they face hidden dangers, forge unexpected friendships, and discover that courage can come from the most unlikely places. Based on Laura Santullo's acclaimed novel They Came with the Wind, The Newcomers is a coming-of-age adventure about friendship, resilience, and the universal right to belong. Directed by Rodrigo Plá (The Other Tom – Cine Latino MSP 2021) and written by Santullo, the film blends thrilling adventure with the performances of a remarkable young cast of natural actors to tell a timely story through the eyes of children. The Newcomers had the World Premiere as part of the Locarno Film Festival Kids Screenings, which this year becomes a new competitive section of the festival dedicated to children's cinema.

Una aventura apasionante para el público joven, Los nuevos sigue a Tiana, una niña que se ve obligada a abandonar su hogar río arriba a causa de la contaminación. Tras mudarse con su familia a un pequeño pueblo río abajo, deja a su querido perro, Nube, al cuidado de Mateo y Tomás, dos hermanos de la localidad. Cuando la contaminación comienza a extenderse, envenenando los ríos y amenazando el futuro de toda la comunidad, Tiana, Mateo, Tomás y Nube emprenden, junto a una intrépida adolescente que conoce bien la zona, una peligrosa misión para descubrir el origen del desastre. A medida que avanzan río arriba, se enfrentan a peligros inesperados, atraviesan territorios desconocidos y aprenden a confiar unos en otros. En el camino, nacen nuevas amistades y descubren que el valor puede surgir de los lugares más inesperados. Basada en la aclamada novela de Laura Santullo, Llegaron con el viento, Los nuevos es una aventura sobre la amistad, la resiliencia y el derecho universal a pertenecer. Dirigida por Rodrigo Plá (El otro Tom – Cine Latino MSP 2021) y escrita por Santullo, la película combina el pulso de una aventura con las actuaciones de un excepcional elenco juvenil de actores naturales para contar, desde la mirada de los niños, una historia de gran actualidad. Los nuevos tuvo su estreno mundial como parte de las Kids Screenings del Festival de Cine de Locarno, una nueva categoría competitiva dedicada al cine infantil.
