Viet and Nam

Dir. Truong Minh Quý
129 min

Vi?t and Nam are lovers, coal miners who steal brief moments of intimacy at work. But when Nam expresses his desire to seek a better life in another country and plans a dangerous escape in a shipping container, Vi?t is at a loss to what his future holds. Truong Minh Quý’s award-winning film was banned in Vietnam.

Toiling away deep in the Vietnamese coal mines, Vi?t and Nam steal away to the smaller caverns to find comfort in each other’s arms. When Nam announces that he is about to embark on a perilous journey to another country, Vi?t is despondent, but vows to make the rest of their short time together memorable. Nam hopes to spend some of it with his mother, searching for the remains of his father, who died in the Resistance War against America. Taking place at the dawn of the 21st century, Vi?t and Nam is a heartbreaking and hypnotic film.
