ABOUT THE FILM
From Brooklyn to Cannes, from independent cinema to global cultural icon, SPIKE LEE: THE KING OF BROOKLYN offers an intimate and incisive portrait of one of the most influential filmmakers of the last forty years. Through archival footage, candid interviews, and behind-the-scenes moments, the film traces Spike Lee’s extraordinary career—from his early breakthroughs to his enduring impact on cinema, politics, and popular culture.
Crucially, the documentary uses animation not as decoration but as a storytelling engine: animated sequences reimagine key moments, evoke the energy of Lee’s cinematic world, and bridge personal memory with public history. The result is a vibrant, hybrid form that mirrors Lee’s own restless inventiveness.
Both personal and political, SPIKE LEE: THE KING OF BROOKLYN captures a creative spirit whose work continues to shape how cinema confronts race, power, history, and the public sphere, in the U.S. as well as in France and Europe.
