MSPFILM Education: Nextwave
Nextwave is the Film Society’s youth education initiative dedicated to the next generation of filmmakers, critics, and film aficionados. Championing youth-made media as well as international cinema made for young audiences, Nextwave is a platform for young people to develop their appreciation for the art and craft of filmmaking, to practice critical literacy skills, and to add their voices to the global conversation.
Nextwave provides multiple opportunities for young people to explore the world through cinema, including:

Nextwave: Youth Film Competition
A celebration of the new generation of cinematic story-tellers, Nextwave Youth Film Competition is the premier regional showcase for young media makers under age 18 and an opportunity for youth to engage with peers and mentors in the field. Youth films are selected to screen at the MSPIFF by a committee of peers and are eligible for competitive awards including Best Youth Film and Excellence in Youth Filmmaking, chosen by the Nextwave Youth Jury.

Nextwave: Youth Juries
MSPIFF invites the next generation of film critics and film aficionados to deepen their experience at MSPIFF by participating on juries for ages 11-14 and 15-18. Youth Jurors learn to apply a critical eye to film, attend MSPIFF, and award films in our Nextwave programs. Middle School jurors will judge the global features and High School jurors will select the Youth Media Competition awards. Applications for Youth Juries will open in January 2020.
Nextwave: Youth Critics’ Circle
The Youth Critics Circle is an opportunity for filmgoers (under 18) to share their love of independent and international cinema with peers and festival programmers. Youth Critics attend festival-organized meet-ups to critically discuss films of their choice at MSPIFF as well as a required programmer-selected film. Critics write a minimum of 2 short reviews, receive support from film programmers and editorial staff, and are published on mspfilm.org as well as social media channels. Applications for Youth Critics’ Circle will open in January 2020.
Nextwave: School and Student Screenings
MSP Film Society hosts film screenings for students and youth groups (middle school, high school, and college), welcoming groups to special screenings during MSPIFF and throughout the year.
