MSPFILM Education: Nextwave
Nextwave is the MSP Film Society’s youth education initiative dedicated to the next generation of filmmakers, critics, and film aficionados. Championing youth-made media as well as international cinema made for young audiences, Nextwave is a platform for young people to develop their appreciation for the art and craft of filmmaking, to practice critical literacy skills, and to add their voices to the global conversation.
Nextwave provides multiple opportunities for young people to explore the world through cinema, including:
Nextwave: Global Features
A dedicated line-up of feature films from around the world centers the experiences of young people at MSPIFF. Films made for families, coming of age stories for middle and high schoolers, and narrative features for young adults are selected to represent the voices and visions of an emerging generation and introduce new audiences to the international film festival experience.
Nextwave: Youth Film Competition
Nextwave Youth Film Competition is the premier regional showcase for young media makers under age 18 and an opportunity for youth to engage with peers and mentors in the field. A wide range of international, youth-made films are selected to screen at the MSPIFF by a Twin Cities-based selection committee. Finalists screen in a free showcase at the festival and are eligible for competitive awards.

Nextwave: SELECTION COMMITTEE
The finalists for MSPIFF’s Nextwave Youth Film Competition are selected by the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s Art Team, a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) group of young people dedicated to racial, cultural, and gender representation as a priority in their work to intentionally make space for youth of various backgrounds, and to create opportunities for emerging youth artists. Art Team has been the festival’s Nextwave Selection Committee since 2016.
Nextwave: Youth Jury
Young film critics and aficionados are invited to deepen their experience at MSPIFF by participating on the jury for the Youth Filmmaking Competition. Youth Jurors (ages 15-18) learn to apply a critical eye to film, attend MSPIFF, and award films in our Nextwave programs. High School jurors will select the Youth Media Competition awards, including Best Youth Film and Excellence in Youth Filmmaking, chosen by the Nextwave Youth Jury.
Nextwave: Youth Critics Circle
The Youth Critics Circle is an opportunity for high school age filmgoers to share their love of independent and international cinema with peers and festival programmers. Youth Critics attend festival-organized meet-ups to critically discuss films of their choice at MSPIFF as well as a required programmer-selected film.
