In the early 20th century, Theresa arrives in a Croatian village, and claims to be the widow of a man who emigrated to Chile. Combative and speaking only Spanish, she begins to ingratiate herself with the man’s family, working the land and tending sheep, and soon the locals wonder about her motives.

Having come from so far away and not knowing the language, Theresa has very few ways of actually communicating with anyone. Using the bible to try and find common ground (and ways to speak to one another), Theresa soon becomes an inspiration to many of the village’s women, and a potential threat to the male hierarchy.
