Meet the Barbarians

Dir. Julie Delpy
101 min

The villagers of Paimpont are loving and open minded. Just look at them! Why, they’re practically begging a Ukrainian refugee family to come to their village and accept their warmest goodwill. But when a Syrian family shows up instead, Paimpont’s supposed compassion is tested.

This picturesque village is known for its delicious crêpes and its age-old traditions, a place where upper-crust French citizens love to visit and get away from the chaos of the world. Touched by the news from Ukraine, the villagers want to do their best to help. But when the Fayad family arrives from Syria instead, the town’s age-old prejudices aren’t just exposed, but inflamed. To complicate matters, it’s not like the Fayads enjoy being there, either. Written (with Nicolas Slomka and Matthieu Rumani), directed, and starring Julie Delpy, Meet the Barbarians is a surprisingly charming satire and kindhearted tale of culture clash.
