The Dating Game

The Dating Game
Men outnumber women in China, the unintended result of the one-child policy, and in a country where loneliness isn’t just painful but downright frowned upon, three desperate men turn to a dating coach to find wives. Meet Hao, who’s “strategic deception” helps men who don’t seem to measure up to society’s high standards. But while it may result in finding partners, will their lies undermine true love?
Hao is a tough customer, a successful dating coach who knows how to bring two people together. Less a matchmaker than a man who helps shape personality so these sad souls can succeed on their own, he refuses to back down when a student pushes back and wants to just be himself. Wen, Hao’s wife, runs her own camp for women and tries to help her charges navigate a world of less-than-honest men… some of whom have come from Hao’s camp. Violet Du Feng’s documentary is delightful, insightful, and heartbreaking in equal measure.
