The Shameless

Dir. Konstantin Bojanov
114 min

Renuka is on the run after killing an abusive policeman and seeks shelter at a rural brothel in the north. There she meets Devika, a 17-year-old devadasi, a low-caste Hindu woman which temples use as sex workers for upper-caste men. The two fall in love in Konstantin Bojanov’s queer thriller.

Renuka is a Muslim woman, her name derived from a Hindu goddess that she assumes while in hiding. Devika is a young girl who dreams of becoming a rapper, but her strict mother and grandmother push her into a form of religious sex work. As the pair fall ever deeper into love, their pasts begin to catch up with them. For her role as Renuka, Anasuya Sengupta won the Un Certain Regard prize for Best Performance at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
